Common mistakes beginners make when cutting their own hair

25 March 2024

Cutting your own hair can be an empowering way to save money and take control of your style, but it is riddled with pitfalls that can turn a confident DIY project into a frustrating reality. At Bella Amici Salon & Spa in Bel Air, we see many clients return with uneven ends or unexpected length changes, often because they underestimated the complexity of working without a mirror or a stylist's guidance. While experimentation is fun, understanding the fundamental errors that beginners make is the first step toward achieving a salon-quality cut at home.

The Peril of Looking in the Wrong Direction

The most glaring mistake beginners make is attempting to cut their hair while standing in front of a mirror positioned directly behind their head. This setup creates a severe blind spot where you cannot see the back of your neck or the nape of your head. Because your vision is blocked by your own hair, you inevitably leave sections uncut or cut them unevenly. To avoid this, you must set up two mirrors: one placed in front of you to see your face and the back of your head, and another positioned behind you to see the back of your head and the front of your face simultaneously. Without this dual-mirror setup, it is nearly impossible to achieve symmetry, especially on the lower sections of your hair where the mirror angle is often most deceptive.

Striking the Right Angle for Precision

Another common error involves holding the hair strands at the wrong angle when snipping. Many novices try to cut the hair at a 90-degree angle, holding the strand perpendicular to the scalp. This technique is actually used by professionals when cutting blunt ends, but it is disastrous for layered or textured hair. When you hold the hair straight down, the scissors tend to cut the hair longer on the inside of the strand, leading to a tapered, uneven look rather than a clean line. The correct approach for beginners is to tilt the hair slightly forward, away from the scalp, at approximately a 45-degree angle. This allows the scissors to cut the hair evenly along the entire length of the strand, ensuring a uniform shape that looks neat and intentional.

Understanding the Importance of Sectioning

Perhaps the most critical concept for a beginner to grasp is the necessity of proper sectioning before making a single cut. Trying to cut a head of hair all at once is like trying to build a house without a blueprint; it is chaotic and results in a mess. You must divide your hair into manageable chunks, starting with a horizontal part down the middle of your head, then dividing the top section into quadrants. By clipping the top layers out of the way using hair clips, you ensure that you are only cutting the hair you intend to cut, preventing accidental snips into sections you haven't prepared yet. Once the base sections are secured, you can work from the back of the neck upward, cutting small horizontal strips at a time. This methodical approach ensures that every strand is accounted for and that the weight of the hair does not cause uneven tension, which can lead to jagged ends or significant length loss.

The Illusion of Length and Texture

Beginners often underestimate how much hair is removed during a single cut. When you hold a strand of hair, you are seeing its full length, but when it is cut, it falls away and appears much shorter due to gravity and texture. What feels like a few inches of hair may actually be a full inch or more. Additionally, curly or wavy hair behaves differently than straight hair; cutting it dry can result in significant shrinkage, making the hair look much shorter once it dries. To mitigate this, it is wise to cut dry hair in very small increments, perhaps no more than half an inch at a time, and to always check the result against a reference point like the neckline or your current style. Furthermore, be aware that cutting wet hair will result in a shorter final length because the hair is stretched. If you prefer the hair to be cut in its natural state, ensure you are cutting dry hair, but proceed with the extreme caution that comes with knowing exactly how much you are removing.

Patience and Practice Make Perfect

Finally, the biggest hurdle for beginners is impatience. It is easy to rush through the process, leading to mistakes that are hard to fix. At Bella Amici Salon & Spa, we encourage our clients to practice on a mannequin head or a friend with a different hair texture before attempting their own cut. Learning to identify natural lines and understand how your hair falls in different lighting conditions takes time and repetition. Remember that a slightly longer cut is always better than one that is too short. Take your time, trust your instincts, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you feel unsure about a specific section. With practice and the right technique, you can confidently manage your own hair, saving money and stress while achieving a look that is uniquely yours.

Here are five essential tips to ensure your first attempt goes smoothly:

  • Divide your hair into four quadrants before you start the first snip.
  • Hold scissors with a loose grip to allow for easier adjustments if you miss.
  • Always check your work in the mirror from multiple angles before moving to the next section.
  • If you are unsure about a specific length, cut slightly more rather than less.
  • Take frequent breaks to rest your eyes and re-evaluate your progress.

By adhering to these guidelines and avoiding the common traps outlined above, you can transform a daunting task into a rewarding experience that saves money and boosts your confidence.
